Great sale of slaves

This source is a picture of a slave auction poster from 1855. It is advertising the sale of people, to those who can afford to pay for them. This source suggests that slavery was wrong because the white people are selling the slaves to the rich people and are making the slaves do jobs for them. For example the poster shows that the slaves were being referred to as Bucks and Wenches, not as male or female, or even as people. Women are even being sold with their babies, children that were described as picinninies. The slaves are being described by the type of job they could do and by their physical characteristics. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because the slaves being sold were dehumanised, sold like they were animals. This was completely wrong as these slaves that were being soldier not animals and should not have been treated like they were. They were the exact same people as the rich people.

Muzzle

This source is a photo of what the slaves had to wear around their head and neck if they tried to escape but got caught in 1807. The mask was made from metal that constricted the slave’s face and neck. This source suggests that slavery was wrong because they shouldn’t of had to wear the muzzle over their mouth with only little holes to breathe through. The metal would get hot in any heat and irritating for the slave’s face and head. For example the image shows how uncomfortable the mask would be to sleep in because the metal around their neck has got spikes on it so the slave cannot rest their head against the ground. It would also be hard to see out of with only small eye holes. It would also be frightening to have this around your neck most of the time after you had got caught escaping. This is evidence to support the abolition of slavery because everyone should be able to be comfortable when they are asleep or even in the day. They should not have metal locked around their head or neck.
