While the Doctors in the Civil War didn’t have as many
advanced tools like we do today, they did have many options to use in
operations. Some of these tools include:
.Surgical Scalpels
.Straight Forceps- used to remove bullets from body
.Large Amputation Saw
.Curved Scissors-used to cut bandages or skin tissues
.Probe- used to locate objects in metal or bone
.Tenaculem- used to stop heavy bleeding from arteries during
amputations
.Bone Brush- used to sweep away bone dust from the cutting
side
.Amputation Knife- used for cutting soft tissues
.Catlin- a Small, double edged knife used in amputations
Each of these tools served a unique purpose during
operations during the war, both on the battlefield and in hospitals. Without
these tools, many amputations or lifesaving operations would have been unsuccessful.
These tools are important to the civil war because without Medical tools,
doctors wouldn’t have been able to perform operations and many more people
would have died.
