EXPRESSIONISM

German Expressionism consisted of a number of related creative movements in Germany before WW1.

It reached its highest peak in Berlin during the 1920s.

The Characteristics are:

Long shadow effects
Artificial sets with realistic details
The details in the sets bring forth the emotional, that stirs audience mind
Camera set in unexpected angles gives audience a different perception
Aims in evoking mystery, hallucinations and extreme emotional stress
Slow pace than other regular movies

Fritz Lang

Fritz Lang was born on Dec. 5, 1890 in Vienna, Austria. He studied architecture and painting briefly before serving in World War I. After the War, he began writing screenplays and became a director of German films until his work attracted the attention of the Nazis. He relocated to the United States and directed films in the U.S. His best-known films were Metropolis and The Blue Angel.

On February 8, 1960, Lang received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the motion picture industry.

Marlene Dietrich and The Blue Angel

Marie Magdalene "Marlene" Dietrich was a German-American actress, who acted on the stage and in silent films.

Dietrich was cast in Germany’s first talking picture Der Blaue Engel (1930) by Hollywood director Josef von Sternberg. With her sultry good looks and sophisticated manner, Dietrich was a natural for the role of Lola Lola, a nightclub dancer. The film helped make Dietrich a star in the United States and become a major leading lady in the 1930s and 1940s.

Later on, she was also known for her humanitarian efforts during the war, housing German and French exiles and providing financial support for Allied personnel.

Greta Garbo

Greta Garbo was a Swedish-American film actress during the 1920s and 1930s. She was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Actress and received an Academy Honorary Award in 1954.

She attracted attention with her first silent film, Torrent, released in 1926; a year later, her performance in Flesh and the Devil, her third movie, made her an international star.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on their list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.

Metropolis

Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist science-fiction drama film directed by Fritz Lang.

Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows the attempts of Freder to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes in their city and bring the workers together.

The silent film is regarded as a pioneering science-fiction movie, being among the first feature-length movies of that genre.

Dr Mabuse, The Gambler

"Dr Mabuse, The Gambler" is the first silent film of the 2 part movie, directed by Fritz Lang. The original title, Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler, makes use of three meanings of the German Der Spieler - gambler, puppeteer, or actor. The character Dr. Mabuse, disguises himself, manipulates people, and is a notorious gambler.

A key theme of the film is the dissolution of German society after World War I. The film portrays but exaggerates the difficult conditions during the period making the film's world a dystopia

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

"The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" is a 1920 German silent horror film, directed by Robert Wiene and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. Considered one of the best works of German Expressionist cinema and it tells the story of an insane hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to commit murders.

The film has a dark visual style, with sharp-pointed forms, curving lines, structures and landscapes that lean and twist in unusual angles.

Nosferatu

"Nosferatu" is a 1922 German Expressionist horror film, directed by F. W. Murnau, and it was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897).

In 1838, Thomas Hutter mysterious employer, Herr Knock, sends him to Transylvania to visit a new client named Count Orlok who plans to buy a house in Wisborg.

Nearing his destination in the Carpathian Mountains, Hutter stops at an inn for dinner. The locals become frightened by the mere mention of Orlok's name and discourage him from traveling to his castle at night, warning of a dangerous creature on the prowl.

Conclusion

In conclusion the 1920s cinema introduced many different, new styles of film and initiated horror and science-fiction.
