These are a line of pikes connected by a log. they were commonly used to defend against large scale attacks and cavalry.
Union General- Joeseph Hooker
He is holding a saber which showed his military ranking. The people below him did not hold this symbol of leadership.
Confederate Cavalry soldier- Confederate soldiers owned their horses and were compensated on a monthly basis. If a soldier's horse was sick, injured, or killed, the soldier was responsible for returning home and replacing the horse at his own expense. The confederates used guns more often than sabers.
Union Cavalry Soldier
Some mounted forces used traditional infantry rifles. However, cavalrymen, particularly in the North, were frequently armed with Sabers.
Bowie Knife
Widely used by both the confederates and the Union. They were used as short range combat weapons and as common knives in the camp.

Saber Rankings- In the Civil war military leaders would wield these swords to show their ranking in the army. They often used them only to call for and action by their army.
