What
change was made in the 1967 Referendum
On 27
May 1967, Australians voted for changes to happen to the
Australian Constitution to improve the services of availability to Indigenous
Australians. The changes focused on two main sections of the Constitution,
which were against Aborigines. The
first section specified all about the federal laws that were designed to
protect all Australians, this didn't apply to Indigenous people. This meant
that Aborigines had different rights in different states and couldn't access
federally funded services like social security and education. Technically this vote was on the Constitution Alteration 1967 Act, which became a law on 10 August 1967 following the results of the referendum.
