The Staatliches Bauhaus

The Staatliches Bauhaus, commonly known as the Bauhaus, was a German art school operational from 1919 to 1933 that combined crafts and the fine arts. It was built by Walter Gropius.

Features of the Bauhaus design

not elaborate furnishing or decorating
mainly simple shapes such as squares, triangles and circles.
The outsides asymmetrical and insides symmetrical
Use of solid materials the likes of steel and concrete
Flat roofs
smooth walls
A lot of glass walls

Walter Gropius

Was the designer and founder of the Bauhaus, and is thought of as one of the most pioneering architects of modern design. His designs were mainly simple but striking.

The Bauhaus was his idea as he wanted more of the art based subjects to be studied together and the school produced most of Germany's amazing artists and architects.

Much of the style from the Bauhaus building has been transformed into new modern designs. The correlations are so recognisable that it almost looks like they are all made by Gropius.

It should be noted that the Bauhaus style extended from buildings through to furniture and typography. Bauhaus design is linked very closely with the ideas of modernism and the forward looking and forward-thinking designs which were found in the art world.

Ernst May

Was a German architect and city planner. MAy was best known for his works in Frankfurt, and his revolutionary efforts on council housing, these created a place for people to get off the streets.It is said that he managed to build twenty cities in three years.

He had a bad run with the German's as he went to the USSR to help build new structures. However after he left, criticism was wide spread by the communists and he was called a capitalist and put him in danger. Later due to his travelling, he could not be associated with a state. The Nazis forced him to Germany as he was not technically a German citizen.

Due to the shortage of housing and the political unstableness in Germany, Ernst May gathered a team of Architects and together they designed their most famous city "New Frankfurt". They were different and better than other cities as they were well thought of and well equipped with schools, parks and playgrounds.

These designs were different to others as every house had an equal right to sunshine and the compactness and efficiency of the houses, meant there could be many buildings.

Bruno Taut

Bruno Taut is well known for his work in the architectural work and theoretical world. He was an architect, author and city planner. Taut was a pacifist so hated WW1, he created an imaginary Utopia, that was a 7km wide circular garden with a central structure. He created two housing estates. He remained with the simple designs but added more decor to both exterior and interior of his designs.

Taut is probably best known for the Glaushousse, (top right), a engineering feat at that time, which propelled the use of more glass into all architecture. It is so influential, that the designer of the botanical gardens building thinks the engineering is amazing.

Top left is an example of how his designs were simple but more decorative than Walter Gropius who made before.

Modern examples of Weimar architecture

A modern example that contains the large sheets of glass, simple shapes and plain block feel. Which is made with solid materials such as steel and concrete. This image shows how much German architecture during the Weimar constitution influenced modern examples.
