Art in Weimar

Post-war Germany was at the forefront of new styles and movements in art and design. Innovations in Weimar art were shaped to a large degree by the social and economic conditions in post-war Germany.

Dadaism

- Dada was an art movement formed during the First World War in Zurich in negative reaction to the horrors and folly of the war.

-Dada artists are known for their use of readymades - everyday objects that could be bought and presented as art with little manipulation by the artist.

-Dada artists aimed to destroy the traditional values of art and question everything after the atrocities of the war. In a nutshell, the Dada art movement was anti-war, anti-establishment, and anti-bourgeois.

George Grosz

-George Grosz was a German artist known especially for his caricaturist drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. He was a prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity groups during the Weimar Republic. He immigrated to the United States in 1933, and became a naturalised citizen in 1938.

-George Grosz did not see war as a great liberator and was fundamentally opposed to it. Nevertheless, he volunteered for military service in November 1914, thus pre-empting conscription.

Otto Dix

-Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix was a German painter and printmaker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz and Max Beckmann, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit.

-During World War II, Dix was conscripted into the Volkssturm. He was captured by French troops at the end of the war and released in February 1946.

Paul Klee and the "Blue Riders"

-Der Blaue Reiter or The Blue Rider Group was founded in Munich, Germany in response against “traditional” methods of art. Their art explored the relationships between art, music, color, and spiritualism. Even though the group was short-lived their art and ideas contributed to the development of German Expressionism.
