The arts of peace and war, including archery and horseback riding, were therefore to be pursued by Samurai warriors with the utmost care. The rule has always been to practice "the arts of peace with the left hand and the arts of war with the right," mastering both.
To rule, it was necessary to be literate, as to draft documents, samurai had to have at least a minimum of calligraphy skills and knowledge of literary conventions. The warrior's ideal balance of military and artistic skill was very important for warriors as a complete man would be combining arts [bun] and arms [bu].
The samurai scholar believed that culture and arms are like the ‘two wings of a bird’, if you have arms but no culture people will be alienated by fear but if you have culture with no arms people will slight you without fear. Meaning you should have a balance of both factors to demonstrate both factors and will be looked at the right way.
