QR Challenge: Our Solar System

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. What happens as the Earth rotates on its axis1The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours. The rotation of the earth causes different parts of Earth to face the sun at different times. This results in day and night in each 24 hour period.1
2. What happens as the Earth revolves around the Sun?2The Earth revolves around the Sun once every 365¼ days. As Earth revolves, different locations on Earth receive more or less direct sunlight. This is because Earth’s axis is tilted. The seasons are caused by this variation in sunlight.2
3. What causes the seasons to change?3Different parts of Earth experience changing seasons because of Earth’s axis is tilted as it revolves around the sun.3
4. Which zone on the Earth receives the greatest amount of solar radiation?4tropical4
5. What is the main reason that summer is warmer than winter?5The tilt of Earth's axis results in more direct radiation from the sun in the summer.5
6. If the rotation period of Moon were to decrease, then __________6both sides of Moon would be visible from Earth.6
7. As the Earth revolves around the sun, the tilt of its axis changes the angle that the sun's rays strike the surface, therefore causing a change of_____________ .7season.7
8. The Earth's seasons are the result of the tilt of the Earth's ___________ as the Earth orbits the sun.8axis8
9. A scientist observes the same craters on the moon every day because ______.9the moon takes the same time to rotate and revolve.9
10. What season is it in Utah when the southern hemisphere of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun?10winter10
11. What happens in the southern hemisphere when the vernal equinox occurs in the northern hemisphere?11the autumnal equinox11
12. In the northern hemisphere, when will the Sun appear highest in the sky?12 the summer solstice.12
13. The amount of time it takes for Earth to rotate once on its axis is referred to as a:13day.13
14. Earth's seasons are dependent upon the __________ at which the Sun's rays strike the Earth.13angle.13
15. The local time in a city is 12 midnight. When the Earth rotates once on its axis and it is midnight again, which of these will have occurred?14and Earth Day.14
16. When does the longest night of the year occur?15the winter solstice.15
17. The time interval between two consecutive new moons is about ______________.1629.5 days.16
18. When the northern hemisphere is tilted toward the sun the days are __________.17warmer and longer.17
19. During _______ the Sun's rays hit our region at a very low angle and the days are the shortest of the year.18winter.18
20. On a hot sunny day, Alisa looked down and saw that her shadow was very short. In fact, she could hardly see it. The reason is that ___________________________.19the Sun was almost directly above her head.19
21. Angelica has noticed that there are different seasons where she lives. The seasons occur mainly because of:20the tilt of the Earth's axis as it orbits the Sun.20
22. Olympus Mons is a large volcanic mountain on which planet?21Mars.21
23. Ganymede is a moon of which planet?22Jupiter.22
24. Earth is located in which galaxy?23The Milky Way.23
25. What is the name of Saturn’s largest moon?24Titan.24
26. What is the name of NASA’s most famous space telescope?25The Hubble Telescope.25
27. Who was hit by a piece of Delta Rocket (also when and where?)26Lottie Williams of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was struck on the shoulder in 1997 by a small piece of debris from a discarded piece of a Delta rocket. She was unhurt.26
28. How hot is the sun (in degrees)?27At its centre the temperature is 15 million degrees Celsius, but on it's surface it is a mere 5,500 degrees!27
29. What Planet is the hottest and how hot?28The hottest temperatures on Venus exceed 900º F. Yikes! Now that’s a scorcher for sure!28
30. What planet has the largest Canyon and what is it called?29Mars has the largest canyon in the solar system - called Mariner Valley. It is 4,400 km long - almost 13 times longer than the Grand Canyon, and is up to 7km deep!29
31. Why will the foot prints that were left on the moon last for nearly forever?30there is no wind, scientist believe, they could last up to 10 million years.30
