QR Challenge: Brain Structure
Teacher Notes
A. Prior to the lesson:
1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.
2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to
- Download a QR reader (e.g. I-Nigma | NeoReader | Kaywa) onto their mobile devices
- Bring these devices into the lesson.
3. Print out the QR codes.
4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.
B. The lesson:
1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.
2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.
3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!
C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS
4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.
Questions / Answers (teacher reference)
Question | Answer |
1. Divide the brain in to the two hemispheres between the eyes like the image here http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/01/Blausen_0215_CerebralHemispheres.png |
|
2. The left hemisphere in the brain is particularly dominant when it comes to language, speech and logic. |
| 3. The right hemisphere is what is involved with movement and memory |
| 4. Use a flag to mark the point of the corpus callosum that joins the two hemispheres http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/Corpus_callosum.png |
| 5. Draw on the frontal, parietal, occipital and temporal lobes. Draw each lobe using a different colour felt tip pen.http://www.csus.edu/indiv/w/wickelgren/psyc001/Brain_Lobes.gif |
| 6. The frontal lobe is responsible for thinking and decision-making. |
| 7. Frontal lobe damage has also been linked with risky and criminal behavior |
| 8. The brain is structured to allow a massive surface area of neurons to fit in a small space, to do this, it folds in on itself, making bulges and folds.Draw one |
| 9. The visible parts, or the bulges, are known as gyri. Label this on your model |
| 10. The hidden areas in the folds, are known as sulci. |
| 11. The cerebellum is found underneath the occipital lobe |
| 12. The brain stem is found below the cerebellum, just at the point where the head turns in to the neck. It's job is to carry nerve impulses to and from the body to the brain. |
| 13. Shade the rough position of the motor strip - responsible for bodily movement. http://thelizarmy.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/level04parietalLobes.jpg |
| 14. The occipital lobe processes visual information from the eyes |
| 15. The temporal lobe contains the centres of the brain for hearing sounds and for remembering things. | |
