QR Challenge: Underpopulation and Overpopulation

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. Overpopulation-if the number of people living in an area cannot be supported by the resources in that area and enjoy a reasonable standard of living it is overpopulated.Just because an area is densely populated doesn't mean it's overpopulated.Geography
2.
3. Underpopulation-if the number of people living in an area is fewer than the number that can be supported by the resources in that area, then it is under populated.History
4.
5. Australia-an under populated country with a population of only 21.7 million and a labour force of only 11.6 million, Australia is under-populated. It is very rich in resources, with large reserves of iron ore, coal, gold, copper, natural gas and uranium.Australia therefore needs to attract migrant workers to exploit its many resources. The positive net migration rate of over 6 per 1000 is the 14th highest in the world. The quantities of many of Australia’s resources are greater then the countries needs, so any surpluses can be exported.Australia's exports were worth over $200 billion in 2010.Its gross domestic product per person was $41300.The service sector employs 75% of Australians. The unemployment rate is low.Classics
6.
7. Australia’s low birth and death rate give a natural population increase of only 1.15% a year. Its population density is only 2.6 people per square kilometre and, although a large proportion of the country is desert or semi-desert, there is ample suitable land for an increase in settlements.Education standards in Australia are high.99% of Australians are literate, and education is available for 21 years of a person’s life. Health care is also good, e.g.The infant mortality rate is only 0.46%.With all these different factors it can be suggested that Australia could support a larger population.Outside bit
8.
9. Bangladesh-an over populated country.Almost the whole of Bangladesh is made up of the Ganges delta and the wide floodplains. As a result the country is frequently flooded. These floods have caused the deaths of more than a million people in the last 200 years.Bangladesh has few natural resources.Of the 73.8 million labour force, 45% work in agriculture.Bangladesh has the seventh largest population in the world - 158 million-but only ranks 94th in terms of land area, so it has a high population density of more than 100 people per square kilometre.Economics
10.
11. Muslims make up 85% of the population. Some leaders do not advocate the use of contraception. With a high birth rate of nearly 23 per 1000, and a high death rate of 5.7 per 1000, Bangladesh has far more people than its resources can support. Its GDP is only $1700 per person. An estimated 40% of the population are under-employed.Many exist on low wages for a few hours’ work a week. There aren’t enough schools or hospitals. Only 48% of the population are literate, and education is provided for only eight years of a person’s life. Most have no qualifications. The infant mortality rate is 5.07% due to poor health care.HE&Careers
12.
13. Lack of clean water-If the country is overpopulated, then the country wont be able to supply everyone with clean water, meaning that some of the population would have to resort to polluted sources, which can make people fall ill with life threatening diseases such as dysentery.Droughts-Further increase rate of starvation in overpopulated countriesHE&Careers
14.
15. Loss of jobs-With higher amounts of workers, for example in the primary industry, where natural resources are then exhausted more quickly than before, there is a sudden increase in unemployment as those men working there would no longer have their job once the resource is exhaustedNot sure
16.
17. Population Growth-Increasing number of immigrants and high natural increase means country is less able to provide for its population.Deforestation-Having to make room for the increased population means there are fewer resources available for cooking/heating/construction in future.Natural disasters-Become more of an issue with a higher risk of more casualties with more densely populated areas in overpopulated countrieslast one
