CONSEQUENCES
Economic consequences
A severe shortage of workers
Can lead to reduced economic growth and the closure of some services
There will be fewer young minds to increase Japan's innovation and support current rate of development
Younger people will have to a pay a lot of taxes as pensions for the old.
71.08% dependent people as a percentage of working population
1.2 million small businesses have owners aged above 70 with no successors
Children have to overwork which causes Karoshi - deaths and suicides due to overwork
Political consequences
Japan will have to reconsider their immigration policies in hope to counteract labor shortages and demographic imbalances.
The Japanese military has been unable to meet its recruitment quotas since 2014 --> high risk if there is a war
Health consequences
Lack of families leads to severe depression – 1.2 M people with mood disorders in 2019
Health Causes
Incentives are limited: Only $3000 given to parents when a child is born. But 18 years of raising children is so much more expensive. Not effective.
