QR Challenge: Probability Revision

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. 1) A bag of sweets contains 8 chocolates, 13 nougats and 9 toffees. What is the probability that a toffee is picked at random?9/30 = 3/10
2. 2)2 students selected at random from a group of 10 boys and 12 girls. Find the probability that they are both girls.12/22 x 11/21 = 132/462 = 2/7
3. 3) Xsara throws a ball 3 times at a target. Each time she throws the ball the probability that she hits the target is 0.2. Calculate the probability she does not hit the target in any 3 throws. 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.8 = 0.512 or 64/125
4. 4)Claude goes to school by bus. The probability the bus is late is 0.1. If the bus is late the probability Claude is late to school is 0.8. If the bus is not late the probability Claude is late to school is 0.05. a) Calculate the probability the bus is late and Claude is late to school. b)Calculate probability Claude is late to school. a)0.1 x 0.8 = 0.08 B)0.9x0.05 = 0.045, 0.08 + 0.045 = 0.125
5. 5)If the first 5 balls picked in the national lottery draw are all even, what is the probability that the next ball picked will be even?19/44
