QR Challenge: Who is Bear Grylls?

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. Shockingly (not really), his name is not actually Bear. His real name is Edward Michael Grylls.
2. His only sibling Lara gave him the nickname "Bear" when he was just a week old.

13. In 2007, he led an attempt to become the first man to fly a powered paraglider to a height above the world’s highest peak - his efforts raised $2.4m for various charities.
14. He has released a Man VS Wild Xbox, Playstation and Wii game with Discovery Channel.
15. Grylls has consumed raw frozen yak eyeballs, camel intestine juice, a live snake, maggots as big as a hand and a giant live spider as part of his show.

17. He was appointed Chief Scout by the Scout association at the age of 35 in 2009. He became the youngest person ever to hold this position making him the Chief Representative for millions of scouts around the world.
18. Some of the injuries he has suffered over the years include crushed shoulders, a sliced finger, a broken elbow, a smashed knee cartilage, a broken big toe, a chipped shin bone, a dislocated hip as well as various bites from snakes, bats, scorpions and 4 319 mosquitoes.

20. In 1997, he also became the youngest Briton to climb the iconic Mount Ama Dablam in the Himalayas (6858m).
21. Bear's son has already saved a life at the age of seven when he rescued a girl who was drowning in a pool.

34. He created a new record in 2007, when he flew a Parajet over the Himalayas. The following year, he accompanied by double amputee Al Hodgson and Scotsman Freddy MacDonald, created a Guinness World Record of the ‘longest continuous indoor freefall’.
35. In the year 2009, he was made the Chief Scout of ‘The Scout Association’ when he was thirty-five years old. Thus, he became the youngest individual to hold the position of Chief Scout.
36. This voyager accompanied by a team of five embarked on Northwest Passage expedition in a rigid-inflatable boat sailing through 2,500 miles, in 2010.
37. The explorer wrote his autobiography ‘Mud, Sweat and Tears: The Autobiography’ in the year 2012.

39. In 2014, his show ‘Running Wild with Bear Grylls’ was launched which featured celebrities such as Zac Efron,Ben Stiller and Channing Tatum.

41. This voyager was felicitated with an honorary rank of Lieutenant Commander in 2004, in the ‘Royal Naval Reserve’.
