QR Challenge: Year 9 Science: Introduction to Psychology

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

Question

Answer

1. Psychology can be thought of as the science of the mind. Psychologists use a scientific approach to describe, explain, predict and influence thoughts, feelings and behaviours in ways that help people. There are many different types of psychologists. In this QR Scavenger Hunt, you will learn about a few of them. The first type of psychologist would examine why some children have difficulty learning in class or the best way to increase contributions to class discussions. Look around the room are you learning in. Can you find the hidden QR code that names this particular psychologist?
2. Well done! An educational psychologist focuses on teaching and learning in educational settings. The next type of psychologist investigates how people’s attitudes can be changed in order to behave in a more environmentally and sustainable manner. Where in the school do we practice sustainable methods and investigate the environment?
3. You found it! An environmental psychologist considers how the physical world affects people’s behaviour. The next type of psychologist investigates how nerves can be calmed before a sporting tournament or what types of short-term goals are best to reach the ultimate sporting performance. Where in the school is best to practice running, jumping and dunking?
4. Correct! A sports psychologist focuses on enhancing sporting performance. The next type of psychologist investigates whether some personalities are more at risk of a certain disease. In which room in the school do Brentwood senior students learn about different types of diseases?
5. Great work! A health psychologist deals with health issues and diseases. The next type of psychologist investigates how stress in students can be reduced and how families can reconnect after difficult situations. Where in the school do you go if you are experiencing difficulties at home or you need a little counselling?
6. Well done! A counselling psychologist deals with issues in life, such as family issues, marriage problems and school concerns. The next type of psychologist investigates criminal behaviour and is often present to question suspects who are found at crime scenes. To determine if the suspect has completed the crime, chemical tests such as fingerprinting and blood spatter analyses are also used. Where in the school do Brentwood students learn about chemical compounds?
7. You found it! A forensic scientist deals with criminal behaviour in legal situations and prisons. The next type of psychologist investigates the area of business and what form of leadership would be most effective for different types of work. When you need to complete a business transaction at school, such as paying for an excursion, where do you go?
8. Correct! An industrial and organisational psychologist focuses on psychological aspects relating to business and industry. The next type of psychologist focuses on people with behavioural disorders, including people who cannot control how much money they spend. If you found $20 on the ground at lunchtime, where would you go?
9. Great work! A clinical psychologist focuses on people with mental illness or behavioural disorders. The next type of psychologist examines why certain people are attracted to each other and why others are not able to cooperate together. If you are having issues with your friendship group at school, who would you seek help from?
10. Well done! A social psychologist looks at social influences on individual behaviour and interactions between groups and individuals. The last type of psychologist examines why some people are more forgetful than others and why people think differently. Go back to your classroom. Can you find the hidden QR code that names this particular psychologist?
11. You’re nearly done! A cognitive psychologist focuses on thoughts, memories and perception. Collect a quiz from your teacher and see if you can match each psychologist with the type of questions that they may ask. The more matches you make, the more marks you collect!
