QR Challenge: Australian History: Five Key Events

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.


B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

1. My name is Captain James Cook. I was the leader of an expedition which in 1770 mapped the eastern coast of Australia. I took with me Joseph Banks, a scientist, who brought specimens of flora and fauna back to Britain.
2. My name is Captain Arthur Phillip. In 1788 I led the First Fleet - an expedition of ships which established the first settlement of white people in Australia on January 26th, 1788.
3. Our names are John Batman and John Pascoe Fawkner. In 1835 we established a settlement at Port Phillip - now the city of Melbourne.
4. In 1851 Victoria separated from New South Wales. This was also the year in which gold was found near Ballarat in Victoria, sparking the beginning of the Great Victorian Gold Rush.
5. In 1859, Australian Rules Football was “codified” - making it an official sport. It was in this year that the Melbourne Football Club was established (the first AFL club).
6. On January 1st, 1901, Australia became a Federation (of states and territories) and the first Prime Minister was Edmund Barton.
