QR Challenge: Qualitative and Quantitative Lab

Created using the ClassTools QR Treasure Hunt Generator

Teacher Notes

A. Prior to the lesson:

1. Arrange students into groups. Each group needs at least ONE person who has a mobile device.

2. If their phone camera doesn't automatically detect and decode QR codes, ask students to

3. Print out the QR codes.

4. Cut them out and place them around your class / school.

B. The lesson:

1. Give each group a clipboard and a piece of paper so they can write down the decoded questions and their answers to them.

2. Explain to the students that the codes are hidden around the school. Each team will get ONE point for each question they correctly decode and copy down onto their sheet, and a further TWO points if they can then provide the correct answer and write this down underneath the question.

3. Away they go! The winner is the first team to return with the most correct answers in the time available. This could be within a lesson, or during a lunchbreak, or even over several days!

C. TIPS / OTHER IDEAS

4. A detailed case study in how to set up a successful QR Scavenger Hunt using this tool can be found here.

Question

Answer

1. Use the picture to list a minimum of three quantitative and three qualitative observations.answers will vary
2. Use the picture to list a minimum of three quantitative and three qualitative observations.answers will vary
3. Look at the plant; gather as much information as you can about the plant using your senses. (REMEMBER NEVER TASTE ANYTHING UNLESS YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO.) Use all of your senses except taste. How does it sound or not sound? How does it look, feel, smell? List your observations on your lab sheet. You should be able to list at least 10 observations.answers will vary
4. Use a ruler to measure the approximate volume of this object. (REMEMBER: Volume = length x width x height.) Record the measurement on your lab sheet. Will it go under quantitative or qualitative data? Use the scale to weigh the object and record your data. Now make other observations and record them. YOU MAY TASTE THIS ITEM BY RUBBING THE ITEM WITH A WET FINGER, AND THEN LICKING YOUR FINGER FOR TASTE.answers will vary
5. Take ONE gum ball and lay it on a napkin. Make quantitative and qualitative observations about the gum ball. Remember to use your senses (DO NOT TASTE AT THIS POINT.) and all measuring devices. Write your observations on your lab sheet. Put the gum ball in your mouth and chew for about 20 seconds (use a timer). Observe only your gum and make qualitative and quantitative observations at this point "during" the process. Make sure your gum stays on a napkin for sanitary reasons. Write down your observations. After you have made both quantitative and qualitative observations, continue to chew the gum for three minutes, and then record observations.answers will vary
